ABSTRACT This research program focused on the development of fly ash derived sorbents to capture CO 2 from power plant flue gas emissions. The fly ash derived sorbents developed represent an affordable alternative to existing methods using specialized activated carbons and molecular sieves, that tend to be very expensive and hinder the viability of the CO 2 sorption process due to economic constraints. Under Task 1 " Procurement and characterization of a suite of fly ashes " , 10 fly ash samples, named FAS-1 to –10, were collected from different combustors with different feedstocks, including bituminous coal, PRB coal and biomass. These samples presented a wide range of LOI value from 0.66-84.0%, and different burn-off profiles. The samples also spanned a wide range of total specific surface area and pore volume. These variations reflect the difference in the feedstock, types of combustors, collection hopper, and the beneficiation technologies the different fly ashes underwent. Under Task 2 " Preparation of fly ash derived sorbents " , the fly ash samples were activated by steam. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms were used to characterize the resultant activated samples. The cost-saving one-step activation process applied was successfully used to increase the surface area and pore volume of all the fly ash samples. The activated samples present very different surface areas and pore volumes due to the range in physical and chemical properties of their precursors. Furthermore, one activated fly ash sample, FAS-4, was loaded with amine-containing chemicals (MEA, DEA, AMP, and MDEA). The impregnation significantly decreased the surface area and pore volume of the parent activated fly ash sample. Under Task 3 " Capture of CO 2 by fly ash derived sorbents " , sample FAS-10 and its de-ashed counterpart …

Bench- and Pilot-Scale Studies on Mercury Removal by Potassium Iodide in Coal-Fired Flue Gas

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic air pollutant with coal-fired utility plants being the largest anthropogenic Hg emission source in the United States. The extent that Hg can be removed from power plants using conventional air pollution control devices (APCDs) is significantly affected by Hg speciation in flue gas. Oxidized Hg (Hg) is preferable to elemental Hg (Hg) in that Hg is less volatile and solubl...

Field Application of Accelerated Mineral Carbonation

Globally, coal-fired power plants are the largest industrial source of carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 emissions from flue gas have potential for direct mineralization with electrostatic precipitator fly ash particles in the field. Demonstration scale accelerated mineral carbonation (AMC) studies were conducted at the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a large coal fired power plant located in Wyoming, USA. AM...

Acidulation and Regeneration of Bamboo Derived Sorbents for Gas Phase Adsorption of Elemental Mercury

This paper presents results that illustrate the recycling of a bamboo derived sorbent used for the capture of elemental mercury (Hg). The bamboo derived sorbent used is essentially a HCl functionalized activated carbon prepared from carbonization and CO2 activation of raw bamboo, that could potentially provide an alternative way to existing methods in removing mercury from flue gases from coal-...

Predicting the impact of SO3 on mercury removal by carbon sorbents

This paper introduces a combined homogeneous and heterogeneous SO3 production mechanism to quantify the interference of SO3 on the capture of Hg by unburned carbon (UBC) and activated carbon sorbents in flue gas from coal-fired power plants. This mechanism was validated against measurements at different locations along the gas cleaning systems at fourteen power plants representing the entire ra...
